How it works
magpi is always listening on the LoRa channel. When a probe reading arrives — directly, or wrapped in a relay from a pidgn — the gateway verifies its signature, unwraps it, and publishes it to the Ripple cloud over secure MQTT. It also sends an acknowledgement back to the probe so it knows its reading was delivered and can sleep, and broadcasts a periodic beacon so probes can confirm their radio link is healthy.
Key capabilities
- Integrated solar panel keeps the unit charged; whip antenna handles the 915 MHz link — mount it high with a clear view of the field
- One gateway serves two probes or a fleet of hundreds — coverage grows by planting pidgn extenders, not re-engineering
- WiFi fallback: if it can't connect, it opens its own setup access point with a branded web page for entering new credentials — LoRa relaying keeps running the whole time
- Relays over-the-air firmware updates to probes and extenders
